Newman shaken by morning earthquake

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Pilbara mining town of Newman early this morning, scaring residents but not causing any immediate damage.

According to Geoscience Australia, the epicentre was located about 42km west of the town at a depth of 12km, but could be felt as far north BHP Billiton's Area C mine site.

Geoscience Australia estimates that damage could have been caused 8km from the centre, and that the vibrations could be felt up to 102km away.

Newman residents reported waking just after 4am to a rumbling that was initially thought to have been an iron-ore train or a blast.

The rumbling and shaking continued for five to 10 seconds.

A spokesman from the Newman Airport said no damage was caused to equipment or planes and no flights were delayed.

No other damage has been reported.
