Workers decontaminated after chemical spill

Up to 30 workers were decontaminated today amid fears they were exposed after a chemical spill at a Mundaring water treatment plant.

Emergency services believe a container ruptured about 10.30am as hydroflurosilicic acid was being unloaded at the new plant, which is yet to be commissioned.

The workers were not exposed to the liquid but potentially to a gas it emits.

The area was evacuated and emergency serviced were called.

About 120 people were on-site but about 30 were close enough to be exposed.

Some reported symptoms including itchiness, a taste in the back of their throat and coughing.

They were doused in water to dilute the gas and checked on site by paramedics.

One worker who left before emergency services arrived went to hospital with similar symptoms and has been released.

A school tour was at the site but left before the incident.
