Police believe boat missing off SA coast has sunk

Two sisters fear their husbands may be dead after two days lost at sea, while a huge search for their missing boat found only a few items belonging to the men.

Longtime mates and brothers-in-law Vince Scarfo and Luigi Palombo - both fathers of two - set out on their regular fishing trip on Sunday morning.

They were meant to be home by nightfall, but never returned.

An enormous search operation resumed today, recovering a life jacket early this morning, while police said they have also recovered some foam and a yellow bucket from the water.

Boats, planes and helicopters have scoured an area south of Cape Jervis in the notorious Backstairs Passage.

Late on Monday, a fuel tank and an esky were found in the water.

Friend of the pair Deborah Tucker described the men as warm-hearted, very generous and incredibly hard-working.

“I personally find it hard to imagine them not here and I’m sure their families will be going through a lot of deep thinking, coming to terms with what may have happened,” she told 7News.

Police believe the boat has sunk.

"The circumstances at this stage are quite grim, however we will always continue to search for people who are possibly in the water, that’s our role," Superintendent Les Buckley said.

Relatives have told police the two men are experienced fishermen who know the waters well.
