Industrial dispute starts hurting Adelaide bus fares

Industrial action by Adelaide bus drivers is starting to hurt with ticketing figures for yesterday down 10 per cent on the same day last year.

Union wants a five per cent pay rise and improved safety conditions and has met with contractor Transfield for negotiations today.

The union has previously rejected a pay offer of 2.7 per cent.

Drivers refused to take fares for a second consecutive day today, with the union promising the action will continue indefinitely.

But it is still unclear how much money in fare revenue will be lost.

Transport Department figures suggest passenger validation as down 10pc compared with the same date last year.

“Collecting money and getting tickets validated is required under the contract, that’s crystal clear, the question is the circumstances in which that is not happening, are those circumstances ones that allow the government to recover all losses from the company, or are they not,” Industrial Relations Minister John Rau said.

Drivers had planned to strike on Sunday between 10am and 2pm, but that has been put on hold because of the forecast extreme heat.

The union will meet the other contractor Southlink tomorrow.
