Backyard fireworks spark blazes across SA

Authorities are fuming after a series of blazes sparked by backyard fireworks across Adelaide overnight.

Police suspect unauthorised fireworks started a grassfire at Rose Circuit in Blakeview about 11pm yesterday which threatened homes.

Fire crews were quick on scene and extinguished the blaze.

Police believe a similar incident on Cornishman Hill Road at One Tree Hill was also started by fireworks.

Resident Joe Fredrico heard loud bangs coming from a neighbouring property around midnight, then the sound of fire trucks.

“They obviously have no understanding of hot weather, dry grass, open paddocks and fireworks – just a disaster waiting to happen,” he said.

Police said blazes at Currency Creek, Sellicks Beach and Athelstone were also started by fireworks.

The Country Fire Service (CFS) yesterday revoked the permit for official fireworks displays at seven regional centres because extreme heat and catastrophic fire danger ratings were in place.

But the CFS is making no apologies for pulling the pin, saying it put community safety ahead of community entertainment.
