92yo man brutally robbed in Redfern

In a low act, a thief has punched a 92-year-old Sydney man, robbing the pensioner of his rent money.

The elderly man was walking home from his local pub in Redfern last night when he was attacked from behind.

Lawrence had been at his regular Wednesday night haunt, the Grosvenor Hotel, playing the pokies, but was attacked just metres from his home.

"When he knocked me down, I shouted, and nobody heard me, no!" Lawrence said.

He was walking home, when a man punched him to the ground, and asked where he lived.

"As soon as I started to talk, he quickly put his hand in [my pocket] and just took all the money."

The former tradesman made it home, and asked a neighbour to call for help.

"I wish I was younger, I would have knocked him out," Lawrence said.

It's a crime on the vulnerable, that's hit a nerve in Redfern.

You know you're frightened to go out and do shopping and everything like that," local resident Mavis Penny says.

Detectives are reviewing security vision from the pub, to see if Lawrence was followed.

Police claim this part of Redfern is a lot safer than it used to be, they've reduced these sort of crimes by two thirds.

They say they’re determined not to let this heartless attack bring their work undone.

"We'll end up getting this person, don't worry about that, and I tell you the community will help us as well," Superintendent Luke Freudenstein says.

The wanted man is described as Aboriginal in appearance, 25-years-old, of thin build.
