Suspicious substance at Islamic book store

Firefighters wearing protective suits and oxygen tanks have been examining a substance from inside an Islamic shop in Sydney's south-west.

Buses are being diverted during the emergency operation on Haldon Street at Lakemba.

The fire brigade hazardous materials team was called in at 3:45pm on Wednesday.


There was a Triple-0 call to investigate a suspicious white powder found in an envelope.

When emergency crews arrived they found an employee with breathing difficulties who was being treated inside the shop.
