Man missing at popular Gold Coast waterhole

Police divers have been called in to search for a young man missing at a popular Queensland swimming spot.

The 19-year-old was swimming at the Killarney Glen waterhole in Beechmont on Friday morning when he went under.

"Initial information is that around 11am, the teenager was swimming upstream when he got into difficulties and became submerged under water," a police spokesperson said.

"As we rocked up there was a lady panicking on the phone and another two distraught young ladies and she said to us her boyfriend went under and didn't come back up," one witness told ABC radio.

More than two hours after the man was last seen, divers were unsuccessful in their search.

The natural attraction is popular among Gold Coast hinterland locals, with a distinctive heart-shaped hole next to the waterfall.

The popular waterhole, situated on land managed by the Australian Defence Force, has been in the spotlight in recent times following concerns about thrill seeker safety and traffic management.

Emergency services were called to the area in August and September this year when two women were injured in separate incidents.
