'Stolen ute' slams into Mercedes at Ipswich

A man is in police custody in Ipswich after allegedly driving a stolen ute through a red light and slamming into a white Mercedes.

The car was trying to turn at an intersection in Silkstone around lunchtime on Tuesday when the incident happened.

Police will allege the ute was stolen at about 10.30am and had been travelling at almost 200km/h before the crash.

Officers said they had discovered the vehicle in a chance sighting and had not been in pursuit.

Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Marshall told 7News, "It was located, a police unit was behind it, attempted to intercept, it immediately took off so the police vehicle stopped."

"This was extremely dangerous, there was no need for him to take off the way he did," Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Marshall told 7News.

A spokesperson for the Queensland Ambulance Service said, one person was taken to Ipswich Hospital in a stable condition following the crash.
