The Miller family have been “overwhelmed” by the community support following the death of their beloved Cole.

Former rugby league player Wally Lewis led the gathering in the sweltering heat.

"There's certainly no place whatsoever in this city or anywhere else for senseless acts of violence in our community," he told the crowd.

Lewis knew the Miller family through water polo.

18-year-old, Cole Miller, was allegedly assaulted in Brisbane on earlier this month and later died in hospital.

The elite water polo player was left for dead when he was attacked while walking with a friend through Chinatown Mall in Fortitude Valley about 3.35am.

It’s believed the two men were about to hail a taxi when they were confronted by four men.

Miller suffered serious head injuries and was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead the following day.

Bravely speaking at a press conference the deceased teen's father, Steven Miller stated, "It is with deep sadness that I announce that our 18-year-old son Cole has today passed away as a result of massive brain trauma."

"He struggled bravely in the intensive care unit of the Royal Brisbane Hospital and our family and many close friends have been by his bedside since the incident."

"Cole was a beautiful, brave, young man who had his whole life yet to be lived."

Police have said they do not believe the attack was provoked.
It’s believed the offenders ran to a nearby car park after the attack, where the got into a car and fled.

Two men aged 21 have been charged over the incident, one from Coombabah and the other from Tanah Merah.

Legal aid representative for accused attacker Daniel Maxwell, Tim Clements stated outside court, "He's voluntarily attended the police station to take part in an interview with police."

"He's alleged to have approached theses two people and asked them if they wanted to fight."

"It's then alleged that the co-accused has come in from behind and that's the punch that has led to this person falling to the ground."

Mr Miller had represented Queensland in under-20s water polo, was a member of the Brisbane Barracudas Water Polo Club and is the younger brother of Australian water polo player and Olympian Billy Miller.
