Woman stabbed in the neck at busy shopping centre

Police are looking for a woman who stabbed a teenage girl in the neck in a frightening attack at a busy shopping centre in southeast Melbourne.

The Pakenham girl was airlifted to The Alfred hospital from the Fountain Gate shopping centre in Narre Warren just after 1pm.

The 16-year-old was stabbed in the neck on a footpath on Magid Drive, outside Fountain Gate.

Police are looking for a Caucasian woman aged in her late teens, with a solid build and dark-coloured hair.

She was wearing a flannelette shirt and was last seen heading south toward the shopping centre.

Police do not know whether the victim and the offender are known to each other.

Part of the shopping centre was cordoned off as emergency services helped the woman, police said.

Police have conducted searches of nearby homes and backyards.

One resident, who lives nearby, told 7News he was told to vacate the area.
