Man arrested in terror raid in western Sydney

A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Sydney's north-west in relation to terrorism offences.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the Beecroft man was arrested by the joint counter-terrorism team as part of investigations into the planning of a terrorist attack on Australian soil and the facilitation of travel of Australian citizens to Syria.

He was picked up by police following a vehicle stop in Beecroft this morning, after information was obtained in operations in Sydney and Brisbane in September.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said there was no suggestion the incident was connected to the hostage situation in Sydney's Martin Place.

"No, at this stage there is no connection," he said.

The man appeared via video link in Sydney Central Local Court today.

A 22-year-old Guildford man, already before the courts charged with preparation of a terrorist act, was also charged with terrorism funding offences this morning.

Police will allege the men made $15,000 in funds available to a terrorist organisation in August.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said investigations would continue.

"This is an unceasing battle for law enforcement but we are heartened by the constant support we receive from communities who understand the need for this ongoing effort," she said in a statement.

"Every piece of information is vital. The smallest snippet of information could complete a jigsaw puzzle that ultimately will neutralise a threat to our way of life.

"The combined work of all agencies has allowed charges such as we have seen today to continue to be laid.

"Today's arrest is just another small step."

Police have now made nine arrests in this operation.

The 22-year-old man Guildford man will next appear in Sydney Central Local Court on Friday.
