Rego saving for Vic apprentices: Labor

Apprentice tradies could soon save money on their car registration under a Victorian Labor plan to help them pay for tools and training.

Standard registration fees would be halved under the plan announced by Labor leader Daniel Andrews on Tuesday.

Under the $26.5 million plan, Victorian apprentice bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, electricians and plumbers who use their vehicles for work will be eligible for the saving.

Other apprentices who can demonstrate their vehicle is essential can also apply for the saving.

"Young apprentices are doing the right thing, getting the skills they need for their career," Mr Andrews said.

"We should be encouraging them, not exploiting them."

He said apprentices needed to drive but they also needed tools and training.

Labor will introduce the plan if it wins next month's state election.

Treasurer Michael O'Brien says Labor's plan would only help apprentices drive to Centrelink, while the coalition was offering jobs building the East West Link, which would employ 150 apprentices and trainees.
