Longer lines at AFL grand final: police

Bag searches will mean longer lines to get into the AFL grand final, Victoria's police commissioner says.

Ken Lay says Australia's heightened terrorism threat level will require more security checks at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, and fans should perhaps arrive a littler earlier than they might otherwise.

"You'll probably see the lines may be a bit longer with the bag searches," Mr Lay told reporters on Monday.

He said he spoke to AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan last week to go over the security challenges of the day.

"We believe we've got a security overlay that will keep people safe, so I would encourage people to go along to the AFL, enjoy your day, Victoria Police and the AFL will work very, very hard to keep you safe," Mr Lay said.
