Summer months boating registration offered for SA

South Australians who only use their boats and jet skis over summer will have the option of a six-month registration.

In line with an election promise made early this year, the SA Government said the move would effectively halve the cost of registration for many people.

The option will become available from October and apply for vessels up to seven metres in length.

Other craft such as jet skis also will have a six-month option.

Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said many people would benefit.

"About 236,000 people participate each year in recreational fishing in South Australia as well as water skiing, jet skiing and other activities," he said.

"Many of South Australia's 59,000 registered boat owners only use their vessels during summer and put them away in the winter."

Ian Fitzgerald of the recreational anglers' group RecFish SA welcomed the new option.

"The change will provide recreational fishers with a money-saving option in their off-season," he said.

Six-month boating registration renewals will be available online at EzyReg.
