Two-year-old boy dies in Adelaide house fire

Firefighters say they did everything they could to rescue a two-year-old boy who died in a house fire in Adelaide’s northern suburbs this morning.

The home in Leslie St in Elizabeth East erupted in flames shortly before 8am.

Neighbours say relatives rescued other children from the burning property through a broken window, but two-year-old Drew was trapped inside.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in just four minutes, but it was too late.

“On this particular case, there was nothing we could have done any quicker or any different,” Rainer Kiessling from the MFS said.

The boy’s distressed father ran toward the house when he arrived and had to be retrained by police.

Drew’s grandmother Nita said the family is shattered.

“He’s a wonderful little boy, but it’s sad to find him passed away in the house, I loved him so much,” she said.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
