Workers walk off Royal Adelaide Hospital construction site

More than 600 workers have walked off the Royal Adelaide Hospital construction site following a collision between two cranes yesterday afternoon.

The CFMEU claims an anti-collision alarm system failed, but the construction company has denied that claim.

No one was injured, but it is the third incident involving cranes on the worksite in as many weeks.

One crane operator said it is a game of life or death.

“At times it’s quite terrifying because I’m watching my friends play Russian roulette with their lives,” one worker told 7News.

Another worker said: “I don’t want to be crushed by a load coming over me, we all want to go home at night, they need to sort it out and get it resolved.”

Workers voted this morning to walk off the job.

“We’ll give them today, Saturday and Sunday to try and make this site safe and until it’s safe we might as well have a long weekend off fellas,” union assistant secretary Jason Wilder told the meeting.

SafeWork SA said since May, there have been five incidents involving three cranes, which have been grounded pending investigation.

It said the remaining five cranes have been inspected and deemed safe.
