Bail denied despite $5 million surety offer

A $5 million surety has not been enough to convince an Adelaide magistrate to release an accused murderer on bail.

The 22-year-old from Hallett Cove is one of five people charged with the stabbing murder of teenager Christopher Hatzis outside Savvy nightclub in August last year.

The latest bid is his seventh attempt to seek home detention.

In court today, prominent QC Lindy Powell said the man’s family was prepared to offer a cash surety and $5 million worth of assets to ensure he attends court.

She claims the case against him is weaker than that of another accused, who has since named her client as the actual stabber.

She argued it was unfair for her client and not in the interests of justice to rely on what one accused says about another.

The prosecution will claim Ms Powell’s client wielded the knife.

The magistrate said there had been no significant change to the evidence since the last bail hearing and refused the application due to the seriousness of the offence.
