Man stranded in flood waters

An elderly man has been winched to safety by a helicopter after becoming trapped in his car by rising flood waters near Buffalo in South Gippsland.

Police say the man, in his eighties, was trying to cross a swollen waterway when his vehicle was swept into raging flood waters.

Local farmer Joel Poletti saw the mishap and drove his tractor into the water, attached his chains to stop the car from being washed away, before dragging the driver on to the roof.

"As soon as I've seen him drive in there, I've gone straight out to help," he told 7News.

"He was just really cold, we got him out of the vehicle and tried to keep him warm."

An air rescue wing was brought in to winch the man out of the flood waters and back to dry land.

Paramedics treated the man for mild hypothermia at the scene and later took him to hospital.
