Putting a price on the Tour Down Under

Tour Down Under organisers have put a price on securing VIP access to the race for the first time.

Various packages are up for grabs to put die-hard fans in the rider’s seat when the race kicks off in the Barossa Valley next January.

For the first time since the race began in 1999, Nuriootpa will host a race start.

Barossa Valley councillor Dave De Vries said it was a welcome boost for the region.

“Every time the race comes through the Barossa, the numbers of people just swell dramatically,” he said.

Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills has been wiped off the map, but its council said there are no sour grapes.

The race will still showcase the Adelaide Hills, with Stage 2 winding up at Stirling.

Victor Harbor will welcome up to 8000 amateur riders for the Bupa Challenge, with riders to finally have their times published.

“They’re always looking for opportunities to gauge their effort against the professionals,” race director Mike Turtur said.

Next year, business won’t be the only ones chasing the tourism dollar – with tour organisers offering an annual membership for the first time.

For $50, fans will receive an invite to an exclusive function, a piece of merchandise like a cap, and inside information from the TDU’s newsletter.

For high-rollers, there is a $1750 platinum package offering prime views, a meeting with a rider, and a wine tour.

Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said: “People who follow cycling and get out on their bikes quite often have a fair bit of disposable income.”

The location for the race’s city finish is still up in the air.

The Minister is tonight heading to Europe to ensure there is no question over where cycling enthusiasts should be next January.
