A koala stolen from a wildlife carer in Adelaide’s south has been returned safe and well.

Rae Williams woke yesterday morning to find four-year-old koala Kao has been stolen from a cage in the backyard of her Trott Park home.

On 7News yesterday, Rae made a plea for whoever took Kao to return her and there would be no questions asked.

At about 10am today, she heard a noise in her backyard and found someone had dropped Kao over the back fence.

Apart from a sore paw, Kao is otherwise unharmed.

Rae said Kao is a little shaken up from her experience, but thinks she will be okay.

She is just grateful her companion is home and had this message for the culprits.

"Please don't do such a stupid thing again, but thank you so much for returning her," Rae said.

"If they had knocked on my door I would've given them a hug."
