Lead levels rise in Port Pirie kids

South Australian health department figures show a rise in lead levels in children in Port Pirie.

Tests reveal the average reading has risen to 5.6 micrograms per litre for the first quarter of 2013, compared to 4.9 micrograms per deciliter for the same period last year.

Health chiefs say it shows a new approach to tackling lead exposure is needed.

"We do not want to see these recent higher than expected results become a regular occurrence," Dr Kevin Buckett from SA Health.

"Continuing to reduce smelter emissions and maintaining the focus on early intervention programs is a priority for us all."

It is hoped a massive upgrade of Nyrstar’s Port Pirie smelter will significantly reduce emissions.
