Qld cyclist breaks record

A Bayside cyclist is home after completing a record-breaking lap of Australia.

Reid Anderton broke down at the finish line after seeing his family for the first time in five weeks.

Under a cover of darkness, Mr Anderton crossed the border into Queensland. It was the final leg of a gruelling race around the country - Victoria Point was both the finish line and home.

It took Anderton 37 days, one hour and 18 minutes to complete the ride - a world record by 19 hours.

"It's my home state. It feels like such a long time since we left it," he said.

"It's pushed me to the limits. Just the ability to stay on the bike, so mentally I've kind of been broken everyday."

His pregnant wife Chantelle and daughter Sierra were waiting, and the reunion brought him to tears.

"I'm not really an emotional person but I knew that as soon I was here, I’d be finished," he said.

He had to beat 377 kilometres a day to make history.

"Watching him go through a huge amount of pain and suffering was really tough," support crew member Dan Brown said.

When Reid crossed the finish line he hadn't slept for 24 hours. Still, he spent the morning meeting and thanking his supporters.

His marathon effort raised money for vulnerable children in Africa.
