Safest seat on the plane revealed

Extraordinary crash test video has shown passengers the safest place to sit in an aircraft.

It appears the cheaper seats in economy aren't so bad after all, while first class passengers have cause for concern.

It is every passenger's nightmare, a Boeing 727 gets into trouble high above the ground and plunges to the ground. The nose of the plane snaps off as it crashes.

A similar would-be disaster was staged in a Mexican desert for a documentary, where the pilots bailed out just before impact.

They left behind them $500,000 worth of crash test dummies as well as cameras and sensors to record what would happen to passengers.

Researchers found the best chance of survival is bracing for impact, with your head down and hands locked behind your head.

Wearing seatbelts, without bracing, still resulted in spinal injuries.

Commercial pilot John Lucig says that if you find yourself in a position where you are in a crash assume the proper brace position, and make sure there are no objects near you that could harm you.

And while most travellers dream about flying first class, the test crash showed that those at the back of the plane would have been far better off.

Passengers sitting in the first seven rows would have died on impact"

Sitting within five rows of an exit also improves your chances of surviving.
