Dozens of Sydney school children rescued from burning bus

Almost 40 schoolchildren had to be rescued from a blazing bus which caught fire on the way to a swimming carnival in Sydney's southwest on Friday.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) were called just before 9am on Friday to extinguish towering flames coming from the bus on Weston Street, Revesby.

Luckily, all 39 children, two teachers and their driver were left unharmed, managing to quickly get out before the bus was swallowed in flames.

"Several students were assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene, but none were transported to hospital," FRNSW said in a statement. "A replacement bus later transported the school group to their carnival."

While emergency services attended, a Revesby local resident filmed the incident which took place right at the front of his house.

Footage showed FRNSW crews hosing down the flames, as well as police attending. The fire was seen to completely destroy the bus.

"FRNSW firefighters quickly arrived on scene and extinguished the fire, with additional crews called in to contain a fuel leak," FRNSW said in a statement.

It was later determined that a mechanical fault may have caused the dangerous mishap, which is "not being treated as suspicious".

NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry described the fire to 7 News as "intense", saying that is usually the case for "vehicles that are quite large".
