Seven people on trial for alleged Australia Day murder
Prosecutors say a young man who was killed in the early hours after Australia Day near Elizabeth Quay in Perth was deliberately mobbed by another group out of anger and revenge.
Seven people are now on trial for the alleged stabbing murder of 26-year-old Patrick Slater, who was attacked and killed in just 45 seconds.
The stab wound that killed Slater was 25 centimetres long and went through his heart and lungs.
When his friends found him, he wasn't breathing and had no pulse.
The attack happened near the Esplanade train station in the early hours after Australia Day last year.
The court heard in the lead up to the deadly incident, two groups had been fighting.
The seven accused were allegedly captured on CCTV carrying weapons including a star picket, rocks, bottles, poles and a timber beam.
Elizabeth Quay was still under construction when the alleged murder took place.
The jury was told one of the accused was seen jumping a fence, and the next morning workers at the site found weapons including a screwdriver with the victim's blood on it.
Defence lawyers are expected to make their opening addresses tomorrow.
