Police from a newly established taskforce which will target gangland crime searched two homes belonging to Assaad's brothers.

Officers from the Middle Eastern Crime Squad were there to issue the men with firearm prohibition orders.

This means police will be able to search their homes for weapons at any time.

Police allege when they searched Tarek Assaad's home they found and seized a loaded handgun, 30 rounds of ammunition, cocaine and vials of steroids.

Tarek Assaad was charged with several drug and firearm offences and is due to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Friday.

The raids have come a day after NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione announced he had created a strike force to target gangland violence.
