A neighbour told Homicide Squad detectives they heard yelling told between two men and there was an altercation prior to the body being located.

Detective Inspector Mick Hughes said the St Kilda victim lived alone and that it was a targeted attack or possibly involved someone known to the victim.

"This, certainly from the scene, appears to be a targeted attack," he said.

Investigators wish to speak to a man last seen walking south in the laneway leaving the scene carrying a backpack and wearing light coloured top and pants.

Det Insp Hughes says the man sustained fatal injuries during the attack but he wouldn't reveal what weapon was used.

Police have found an item at the scene that might be the murder weapon.

Tradesmen have told the Herald Sun that there is often a heavy police presence in the laneway which is frequented by drug users.

Detectives have blocked off the rubbish-lined street and are talking to residents in nearby rooming houses as they search for clues.

Forensic investigators - some carrying brown-paper evidence bags - are also at the boarding house.

They are expected to remain at the scene for some time.

Neighbours say there is often a heavy police presence in the laneway which is frequented by drug users.

"It's pretty bad at night," a local man told AAP.

A post-mortem will be conducted on Monday afternoon.
