Accused monkey bike killer walks free despite another bail breach

A magistrate has refused to order alleged monkey bike killer Caleb Jakobsson back to prison despite the teenager repeatedly breaching his bail conditions.

Not even behaviour described as disrepectful to Andrea Lehane's family was enough to see him back behind bars.

Caleb Jakobsson has been in and out of the Melbourne courts for the last eight months.

On Monday afternoon Jakobsson was given yet another chance.

The 19-year-old is accused of running down Ms Lehane with his monkey bike at a Carrum Downs shopping centre in September last year.

The mother of two later died in hospital.

Since the alleged hit run the court heard Jakobsson has repeatedly breached his bail.

He filmed himself drinking and breaking another condition.

The court previously heard he had also breached his curfew eight times.

Magistrate Charlie Rozenscwag told him "your actions are disrespectful to the loved ones of the deceased."

But despite this, he granted Jakobsson bail.

The magistrate said: “It comes as no surprise that many people in society think that you should be locked up before you are even tried. But bail is not a punishment.”

The move has angered the local Carrum Downs community, who walk past the scene every day.

Jakobsson refused to comment as he walked free from court.

This most recent breach was found by 7 News on Jakobsson's Instagram account so as well as his existing bail conditions, the magistrate banned the teenager from using social media.

Whether he adheres to these conditions remains to be seen.
