Newborn baby left homeless for four days after dispute between surrogate mum and biological parents

Urgent calls are being made for Australia's surrogacy laws to be reviewed after a newborn boy was left without a home for four days.

Surrogate mother Alexa, from north Queensland, shared her story with ABC's 7.30 programme telling the show that the arrangement between herself and relatives went sour after the couple allegedly refused to pay her expenses.

Alexa (whose last name cannot be revealed for legal reasons) says she felt 'used' by the couple after communications broke down during the first trimester of the pregnancy.

The mother of one says the situation got so bad between the two parties she even considered getting an abortion at 16 weeks but was told it was too late.

After the baby was born last week the couple and Alexa were left in a standoff and it was not clear who the little boy would go home with.

"It started out for love, and without support, gratitude or thanks it just got worse, so I literally just carried a baby, got used and handed it over and got a kick in the a***," Alexa told ABC.

Alexa refused to sign over parentage unless her expenses were paid in full, the parents had initially only agreed to pay two-thirds of the $8,300 total.

Alexa said the couple, who she is related to, asked her to be their surrogate in 2014 and she didn't hesitate because she had witnessed them struggle to conceive for a long time.

ABC reports commentators argue the current surrogacy laws can leave all parties relying on goodwill and that reform is needed.
