Syringe found in chocolate bunny, as Woolies faces string of Easter blunders
A man from Melbourne’s east received a “terrifying” surprise when he broke into a Cadbury Easter bunny on Good Friday.
When Peter Oakley unraveled the shiny foil wrapper of a white chocolate Cadbury Dream bunny, he said he found a capped syringe hiding inside.
According Mr Oakley the chocolate his mother purchased from the Canterbury Gardens Woolworths supermarket in Kilsyth appeared to have been tampered with.
“Looks like someone peeled back the foil and jammed [the syringe] inside and then put the foil back in place. The loose bit of chocolate was still inside,” he posted on his Facebook account on Good Friday.
“How's this for an Easter surprise... I find this terrifying,” he wrote in a caption with the pictures of his apparent discovery.
“It might be the only one or it could be inside many. Lucky it was just us adults around the table, it could have been a child.
“Keep your eyes out before giving choc rabbits to friends or kids. Hopefully the d****head that did this did it only once as a joke.”
A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed a customer alerted the Canterbury Gardens store to the issue on Friday evening and "staff immediately responded".
"Staff inspected all existing stock and a further investigation is currently underway. Woolworths takes food safety very seriously and we are confident that this is an isolated incident," the spokesperson said.
The supermarket giant has come under fire nationally for a string of blunders this Easter, as customers vent their frustration over the quality of holiday goods and trading.
Another customer claims to have found a cockroach in their giant Easter egg box packaging, purchased at a different Woolworths store.
“Very sad six-year-old given egg with cockroach in the packet!”, a mother Sarah posted on the Woolworths Facebook page.
Others reported stores closing earlier than advertised, and hot cross buns frozen or not properly cooked in the middle, missing sultanas, or were reported to be mouldy.
“My Woolies mini hot cross buns with fruit. Purchased at Murray Bridge. Almost 2 sultanas per bun. Not enough fruit Woolies,” Lisa from South Australia wrote in a post accompanying a photo of her buns.
“Under cooked doughy 6 fruit hot cross buns for breakfast this morning from Coolangatta store,” Gayle said of her purchase.
“Absolutely no fruit (or flavour) in our Woolworths hot cross buns. Label says 26 per cent fruit but ours had 0 per cent. Very annoyed,” another customer Rachelle posted.
A string of other customers have reportedly turned up to their local Woolies store to find it shut despite the opening hours specifying otherwise.
