18-year-old accused of trying to kill her pregnant friend

An 18-year-old Arizona girl has been accused of being so obsessed with having a baby, she plotted to kill her pregnant friend and steal her unborn baby from the womb.

According to the Arizona Republic, police uncovered the plot when firefighters responded to a blaze on February 16. Police allege Toruga set fire to the pregnant woman's bedroom closet.

Kassandra Toruga was found in the victim's apartment with two large butcher knives, scissors, nappies and baby clothes.

The teenager admitted she had planned to kill her friend and perform a caesarean section to take the baby.

Police say Toruga has a history of schizophrenia and had told people she was the one who was pregnant.

She even had an ultrasound picture as the profile picture on her MySpace page.

The pregnant woman has since given birth and is said to be fearful that Toruga may still try to steal her baby.

Toruga made her first court appearance today and has been charged with attempted murder, arson and burglary. She remains in police custody on a $500,000 bond.
