District attorney Kevin Hayden called the investigation "one of the most complex, unusual and perplexing that this office has ever encountered". Investigators don't know whether the four babies - thought to be 37 to 40 weeks old - were born alive, which was part of the reason not to bring criminal charges, Mr Hayden said.

He was today (Fri) still being quizzed by detectives over the shooting of Marcus Smith, 19, during the second break-in at his property in less than 10 hours. Smith's mum Kerry, 51, uploaded a photo of her with her son on social media which prompted an outpouring of sympathy from well-wishers. One wrote: "I’m truly heartbroken. Sending love to you all." Another said: "We are so shocked and so heartbroken, nothing can express how deeply sorry we are."
