Pensioner bashed by thugs armed with hockey stick in Geelong home

A pensioner has spent three days in hospital and will need surgery, after he was beaten by thugs armed with a hockey stick in a shocking home invasion.

John Drake is still recovering from the brutal attack, and says he has no idea why he was targeted.

“The blood come pouring out,” Mr Drake said.

“It was coming from me nose, and from me head, just pouring out.”

The 80-year-old’s body was left covered in bruises, after he opened the door of his Geelong home on Friday night.

Mr Drake said a teenager at the door asked him for a lighter but it was an ambush, and within seconds three young men were attacking him.

At first the 80-year-old was punched in the face, then they beat him with a hockey stick.

“I can defend myself, but not when they come at me like that, just hard,” Mr Drake said.

He suffered a broken nose, and required stitches in his head but conceded it could have been much worse.

“I knew if I feel down, they’d kick my brains out, so I thought I’m not falling down for anyone, so I didn’t,” Mr Drake said.

The group ran off after a few minutes and Mr Drake was able to call for help.

Police have charged a 22-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy over the attack, and are still searching for the third person.

Mr Drake, who has lived in his home for 30 years, believes the attackers are the same people responsible for vandalising his car in recent weeks.

Despite Friday night’s attack, Mr Drake said he refuses to move.

“I’m staying and that’s all there is to it,” he told 7 News.
