'I got emotional a few times': Fanning surfs ice waves in Alaska

Aussie Mick Fanning has described surfing waves filled with "giant ice cubes" in Alaska as one of the greatest experiences of his life.

Fanning was joined on the trip by fellow surfer Mason Ho as the duo headed north for an adventure, sponsored by Rip Curl.

"I got emotional a few times actually, just standing there (and) taking in the surroundings," Fanning said.

"It just makes you appreciate how beautiful the surf is."

After a tough 2015, the 35-year-old opted out of the full-time world surfing tour with an aim to travel the world with friends.

Fanning and Ho signed up for Rip Curl's #TheSearch for an episode dubbed "Comfortably Numb".

"For me this trip came at the perfect time, it was totally different to anything else I've ever done," Fanning said.

"We were running into microwave-sized blocks of ice, if not bigger.

"We just got smashed and it hurt."

Ho made the most of the icy conditions, using his board to coast down the snowy hillside.

Described by Fanning as one of the funniest days of his life, the Aussie fan favourite found time to enjoy the icy conditions by catching a few waves.
