Australians give their two cents on the $5 note redesign

The Reserve Bank of Australia has released a new-look $5 note featuring new security safeguards and "tactile" features for the vision impaired.

The Queen of Australia looks a little more mature than the current $5 note and we get a whole new perspective of Parliament House.

But other than a vertical blue strip down the middle of each side, a smattering of Prickly Mosses wattle flowers and little bird, the new Fairy Floss fiver looks pretty much the same.

Some likened the note to "vomit", while Australian Twitter users, true to form, put forward their alternative designs.

This would suit Territorians.

Finger puppets on future note releases would make honouring great Australians all the more fun.

The former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in his "speed dealer sunnies" with onion motif.

The man who would be king of Australia.

A great Tasmanian, destined to one day appear on Australia's currency.

Others nit-picked.

Others simply prefer complete redesigns entirely.

And why note rename the dollar while we're at it.

The RBA said it kept the basic colour scheme to allow for easy recognition, which also means the new fiver can hang onto some of its nicknames, including the "galah", "fair floss" and the "Pink Lady apple".

Unfortunately, Fred Hollows did not make it onto the new design.
