Toddler's face and head mauled during dog attack

A two-year-old boy has been mauled in a backyard dog attack in Victoria.

He was bitten repeatedly on the head and face when the dog launched at him on Monday afternoon at a property in Woori Yallock.

The two-year-old sustained serious facial wounds and may need plastic surgery.

He was brought to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne with his head bandaged and blood on his t-shirt.

The local council said the dog was an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

In a statement, the Shire of Yarra Ranges said the dog belonged to a family friend who was visiting the property.

The animal has been impounded. The little boy is in a stable condition.
