Truck driver's quick thinking avoids horror smash on notorious stretch of Pacific Highway

Dashcam footage has captured the moment a truck driver saved two families from near-certain heartache over Christmas, as he swerved to avoid a head-on collision.

The incident happened on the Pacific Highway near Clybucca in NSW on December 18, on the same bend as a 1989 bus crash that killed 35 people.

The footage, posted to Facebook by Dash Cam Owners Australia, shows the full glare of a large truck’s headlights as it approaches, south bound, at 1.30am.

It very quickly becomes evident that the truck is on the wrong side of the road.

The driver of the northbound truck, a B-Double, reacts incredibly quickly and swerves off the road, missing a sign post on the left by inches, as well as the on-coming truck on the right.

He then somehow manages to pull the truck back on the road and straightens it up within 15 seconds.

The driver was lucky no other vehicles were headed south, as he swerved from the north-to south bound lanes momentarily as he maneuvered the truck back on track.

The video attracted much attention from fellow social media – and road – users, who found the B-Double driver’s quick response remarkable.

“Well done the cam driver, excellent job in keeping it under control,” Michael Wulff commented.

Several users pointed out that the incident happened on a notorious stretch of road where two buses collided in 1989, killing 35 people.
