Cabbie robbed at knifepoint

A taxi driver says he was lucky to escape unharmed after a passenger held a knife to his neck and stole cash early this morning.

Mdabu, who does not want his surname revealed, picked up a passenger near Council House on St Georges Terrace in Perth about 2.15am.

The passenger asked to be driven to Cannington. When they arrived at Cecil Avenue, the passenger told the driver to stop and held a blade to Mdabu's neck, demanding that he hand over money.

In an attempt to appease the passenger, Mdabu handed over about $180 from his wallet and the passenger got out of the taxi.

Mdabu, 34, said the "gentle-looking" and quiet passenger did not appear violent when he entered the cab.

"He had a nice smile on his face," he said hours after his ordeal, which happened as he finished his shift.
