KTI gets world-class upgrade

Kimberley Training Institute's new state-of-the-art teaching facilities officially opened last week, aimed at boosting training in the region and preparing students for the workforce.

Training and Workforce Development Minister Liza Harvey and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman were invited to open the $15 million projects - an industry-standard trades centre and a world-class maritime simulation facility.

The facilities were constructed by Colin Wilkinson Developments and recognised in last month's Master Builders Awards.

KTI received $10 million funding from Royalties for Regions, and a further $5 million from State Capital Works programs for the developments.

KTI staff, delegates and community members gathered to celebrate last Thursday's launch.

Ms Harvey said the trades centre was designed to meet growing industry needs and provided opportunities for Kimberley people to receive the same level of world-class training available to other WA residents.

It allows for training in engineering, automotive, construction and for the first time, civil construction on site.

Mrs Harvey said the Broome Maritime Simulation Centre gave local people the chance to access training not available elsewhere in the country.

It provides world-class evaluation of port development and redevelopment projects, pilot validation and assessment, emergency procedures training and other specialised training.

Martha Lee shared her story behind the artworks she created for the projects and guests were invited to tour the buildings after the launch.
