Residents to make a splash at Oasis open day

While a cold start to autumn in the Goldfields may not make for prime swimming weather, Willow Johnston, 8, and Tinequa Tarrant, 10, are still looking forward to hitting the pool for the Bombie competition, and plenty more entertainment, at tomorrow’s Goldfields Oasis open day. The Goldfields Oasis is relaxing its rules and embracing change this weekend, hosting a "bombie" competition and dance battle during tomorrow's open day.

In celebration of its first gym upgrade since opening in 1999, the centre is ignoring its strict "no jumping" pool policy, encouraging big splashes for the 2pm competition.

The free open day coincides with the re-opening of the centre's newly refurbished gym, which is now fitted out with Technogym cardio and weight training equipment.

A giant zumba party held in the stadium will also be a first for the centre, after receiving the licence to run classes earlier this month.

Oasis marketing and membership co-ordinator Michal Callister said the biggest part of the day was the unveiling of the new equipment

"This is the first upgrade since the place has been open so it is long overdue, but we are confident our members will be more than pleased with the end result," he said.

"None of the old equipment is there anymore… except for the rowers because they are top of the line anyway.

"Normally our open day is just to promote the centre as a whole, so this upgrade has just given us another great aspect to show off to the community."

The open day will kick off at 8am with an inflatable obstacle course set up in the stadium, followed by the zumba party at 9am.

At 10am, centre manager Cheye Hill and RadioWest's Glenn Wilson will battle it out on the dance floor.

From 1 to 3pm, children aged five and under can take part in Splash 'n' Play, while the older children can play around with the various inflatables until 4pm.

The highly anticipated bombie competition will get under way at 2pm, followed by a "classic catches" competition at 3pm, where children will attempt their best tricks while catching a ball mid-air.
