Boats washed up on powerful winds

Squally winds and strong tides wreaked havoc along the coast at the weekend, leaving several yachts and powerboats stranded along Mangles Bay and Palm Beach, minor flooding on the streets and leaking roofs.

North-north-easterly wind gusts of 93km/h were recorded at 11.31am on Saturday, the strongest for the month so far.

As for rainfall, 13.6mm was recorded at Garden Island on Saturday, 21mm on Sunday and 24mm to 9am on Monday, bringing the month's total to 65mm.

Minimum temperatures were recorded of 13.5C on Saturday and 12.7C on Sunday, slightly warmer than this month's lowest minimum of 10.9C on May 6.

Maximums at the weekend were 18.5C on Saturday and 19.2C on Sunday, slightly cooler than the long-term average maximum for the month of 21.5C.

Rockingham Kwinana State Emergency Service manager Dave Beard said the team responded to 15 calls, mostly for water coming through roofs, trees on cars and flooding.

He said Sunday was the busiest, with three teams out to clear the jobs.

Mr Beard urged residents to prepare for the next storm front by cleaning out gutters and putting things away.

"People tend to remember to tie down the big items but forget about the outdoor table and chairs and the trampoline," he said. Rockingham Salvation Army Lt Darrell Wilson said the roof at the carpark entrance collapsed about noon on Sunday, apparently a result of the eaves filling with water.
