The grounds of St George’s Anglican Church in Bluff Point will become a bustle of activity tomorrow when the church holds its biggest annual fundraiser.

With cakes, home produce, secondhand books and plants for sale, and clothing, jumble and white elephant stalls, train rides, jumping castle and activities for children, the annual Mayfair has all the elements of a good old-fashioned country fair.

Senior minister Andrew Burr said the annual event was a fundraiser for ministry projects, but its primary purpose was to connect with the community. He said the year-long preparations unified the congregation.

“Mayfair is tied to the life of the congregation. It’s a big physical effort. We’re not a big church and if we weren’t working together, it wouldn’t happen, ” Reverend Burr said. “The fair gives families a good fun time, but it also provides a great project for the church team to work on together.”

He said the Bluff Point Mayfair was started in 1935 or 1936 by church worker Cecily Biddle to raise funds for church ministries. The event takes place in the church grounds but visitors can go inside the historic St George’s church, built in 1935, to view displays by the Mission to Seafarers and the Mothers’ Union of Australia and be entertained by members of Geraldton Choral Society.

Rev. Burr said the fair had attracted more than 2000 people each year.

“This one will be the best there’s ever been, because we’ve had 80 years of practise, ” he said.

The St George’s Church Mayfair starts at 9am at 369 Chapman Road.
