Chimneys spark flue season tips

Fire authorities are urging residents to get chimneys inspected and cleaned in the lead-up to winter to avoid fires.

Manjimup Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service fire captain John Jonker said it was an issue that resurfaced every winter.

"We've already had one chimney fire this year and looking back on previous years, I expect we'll probably get a few more," he said.

"Unfortunately we usually end up dealing with about five or six a year.

"The damage to this house was quite minor, just smoke damage and a little water damage, but it could have been a lot worse."

An internal fire can completely engulf a residence within four minutes, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

DFES fire manager Peter Thomas said prevention was the key to combating the threat of chimney fires.

"The most important thing is ensuring chimneys are clean and functional prior to igniting," he said.

"There may be a build-up of burnt materials inside the flue.

"The other issue is corrosion, rust and deterioration in the chimney, which can result in hot gases escaping into the roof space."

Mr Thomas pointed to a case in Bridgetown last year in which a house was almost completely destroyed as the result of a chimney fire.

"I encourage everyone to check their chimneys at least once a year, particularly before igniting them for the first time," he said.

Mr Thomas warned that self-checks were not practical for everyone - particularly Manjimup's ageing population.

"You should only be getting on the roof if you have the physical ability to do so," he said.

"Otherwise, contact a professional."

Along with Mr Thomas' recommendations, Mr Jonker advised residents to inspect the insulation around the flue, install smoke detectors and have them tested for accuracy.
