Driver critical after cyclone crash

A driver is in a critical condition after being involved in a car rollover during a cyclone red alert warning in Carnarvon on Friday.

The man was injured while driving on Robinson Street as Tropical Cyclone Olwyn swept through the North West about 7.30pm.

The man, who is a French national, was thrown from the car, which is understood to have ended up on its roof.

Major Crash Detective Sergeant Jim Giorgi said it is believed the driver swerved to avoid debris in the road before the car struck a kerb and rolled.

The driver was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Royal Perth Hospital.

His male passenger, who is also from France, received minor injuries in the crash.
