Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a woman from a suspected knife attack in Sydney's west.

Prabha Arun, 41, was in Australia to work and support her young daughter and husband in India.

She was on the phone to him when she was brutally set upon in a park just metres from home last night.

Arvand Amirian, 17, was in his bedroom and heard a woman screaming and he rushed outside to see what was going on.

He found the mother lying on the ground in Westmead.

He told 7News: "The scream sounded intense like that crying scream thing it sounded intense it didn't sound normal"

"There was blood covering her face her neck her chest.

"They asked me to keep doing the cpr until the ambulance people came."

She was taken to Westmead Hospital, where she died early on Sunday.

"A post-mortem is being conducted to determine the cause of the woman's death. However, early investigations suggest she died as a result of a wound inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon," police said.

It's believed the woman was walking home from Parramatta train station when she was attacked.

A crime scene has been established and forensic experts are investigating, along with local police and homicide detectives.

Neighbours described her as a friendly and quiet woman who'd been sending money back to her family and looking forward to flying home in June when her work Visa expired.

Ganash Ganashalingam told 7News: "She's got family and she's a student coming and loiving and studying and she works long hours."

Police are investigating whether Prabha was killed during a robbery she was still carrying her handbag when she was found.
