The Year of the Goat began with traditional dumplings and children's craft activities for a group of Rockingham mothers late last month, thanks to a new mums and bubs group designed to preserve Chinese culture.

Mother-of-one Yudi Lin said she wanted to start the playgroup at Marilla House Community Centre to acknowledge the heritage of Australian-born children and share information with new migrant mothers.

Ms Lin said the group had already gathered some interest, but she hoped to reach out to other Chinese mothers who may be feeling isolated.

"My daughter Zihan was born here and I wanted her to be able to be in a Chinese-speaking environment sometimes and to share culture with other children," she said.

"We have also been able to share information with some of the mothers who are quite new to Australia."

Ju En Hsiao, who attends the playground with her one-year-old son Isaac, said she had felt socially isolated since she arrived in the country 18 months ago.

She said she had been able to share information and parenting tips with the other mothers.

To join the group, Pop down to Marilla House on Dargin Way, Rockingham on Wednesdays between 2.30pm and 5pm.
