Chinese New Year to paint Rockingham red
Rockingham families will welcome the Chinese New Year tomorrow night with get-togethers, specially-prepared cuisine and wishes for good luck.
Exclusive Chinese Restaurant owner Donny Low said he would welcome the Year of the Goat with a family meal on Thursday, with formal celebrations taking place at the Rockingham foreshore restaurant from Tuesday next week.
Mr Low said he looked forward to welcoming back to Perth the dancers who wowed crowds in 2014 with their colourful lion costumes in a 30-minute performance designed to bring good fortune.
He said the performers, who would appear in Rockingham next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, would be accompanied by the tanggu drums and the cymbal.
"The lions will be fed coins to scare bad luck away - they spit out letters to bring good luck," Mr Low said.
"It will be an excellent three days and we will be offering a special rainbow salad at the restaurant, which also promotes good fortune."
South Metropolitan MLC Phil Edman, who attended 2014 festivities at Exclusive Chinese Restaurant, said diners were treated to traditional raw fish salad yee sang, also known as the prosperity toss, believed to bring wealth and prosperity when eaten.
Mr Edman said the festivities were a reminder all cultures and traditions were to be respected.
"I am very much looking forward to attending Chinese New Year celebrations at Exclusive Chinese Restaurant again this year," he said.
"It's great that we have so many different cultures in and around Rockingham."
