Alleged 'ATM bomber' arrested after fleeing country

A man who made headlines overseas after being knocked over while allegedly trying to blow up a Darwin ATM has been arrested.

Northern Territory Police arrested the 29-year-old man following an explosion at the ANZ bank in Winnellie on December 30 last year.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Day from the Serious Crime Squad said the man fled the country soon after the incident.

"He returned recently and was arrested in Berrimah yesterday by Serious Crime Squad Detectives," he said.

"The man, who received significant burns to his arm during the incident, has been charged with arson and remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Magistrates today."

Detective Senior Sergeant Day thanked members of the public for their assistance in the matter.

The man allegedly failed to make off with any cash after the dramatic explosion.

The video of the bungled robbery went viral online, with news website from around the world picking it up.
