A leading South Australian surgeon is being investigated over a claim she slapped a nurse in front of a patient during a procedure.

Gynaecologist Professor Margaret Davy, the head of surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, said she is flabbergasted by the suggestion of any wrongdoing and denies any knowledge of the incident.

"I strongly deny any wrongdoing," she told News Corp.

Professor Davy, one of the nation’s leading gynaecologists, said she had taken long service leave and had ‘definitely not resigned’.

Health Minister Jack Snelling has confirmed a formal investigation is underway into what he said is a serious allegation.

"If found to be true, I would expect appropriate disciplinary action to be taken," he said.

News Corp reports the alleged incident took place during a colposcopy, while the patient was conscious and believed to have witnessed it.

In 2002, Prof Davy was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for services to Women's Health while she also established the national cervix screening program
